Skype introduces 3G calling for iPhone

Skype 2.0 has been released on the iPhone and it now supports calling over 3G. Previously you could only make calls while on a Wi-Fi network but Skype 2.0 allows you to make the calls on a 3G connection. While many have been wanting this for ages, there is a downside. Currently making a call over 3G is free but, from the end of August there will be a charge. Skype are planning to introduce a monthly fee for the service. There isn’t information on how much exactly it will be other than “a small monthly fee”. Data charges will also apply on top of this. So if you have a data plan you’re good to go but, if you’re on a Pay as you go data plan, it’s advised that you’re cautious over how much you use the 3G service. UberGizmo have also pointed out that customers on Verizon who use the service will not use data from their plan but, rather taken from their wireless minutes as it uses a special number.

There’s also a video of the service in action after the jump.
